Choosing a magazine app? Test subscriber access in your demo
A magazine app demo should help you judge whether the product fits your publication and your subscribers. Attractive screens are useful, but they cannot show whether a reader with a particular subscription will reach the right issue. Bring a small set of access scenarios to the meeting and ask the supplier to work through them. You will leave with clearer requirements, fewer assumptions and a better basis for comparing solutions.

Define what each subscription includes
Before the demo, describe the access a reader should receive: titles, current issues, earlier editions and the channels included in the offer. A single-title magazine and a media group with several publications may need different rules. Identify the system that holds the customer account and the system that determines access rights. Your purchasing team should be able to explain the desired journey without turning the meeting into an integration specification.
Ask to see five representative reader journeys
Use dedicated demo accounts with agreed permissions. Do not share real subscriber passwords or personal data. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the following situations:
- An active subscriber opens a current issue on a phone, a tablet and the web. The right publication should appear without an unexpected purchase prompt.
- A new subscription becomes available. Establish when access should start, how systems exchange the information and what the reader sees while waiting.
- A reader forgets their password. Follow the recovery route back to the intended issue and identify who owns the account and the help process.
- A subscription includes only selected titles or archive periods. Check both permitted and excluded content; the explanation should make sense to the reader.
- A subscription changes or ends. Discuss the intended access after renewal, cancellation or a package change, including the timing of updates.
Separate sign-in from access to paid content
Authentication establishes who the reader is; access rights determine what they may read. Treat these as separate questions in the demonstration. A successful login does not prove that an entitlement arrived or that the correct issue opened. Ask what happens when the systems disagree and how support can investigate it. Record any dependence on your existing subscription service instead of assuming the app manages the entire commercial relationship.
Evaluate the experience after the issue opens
Access is the start of the reading experience. Try navigation between the edition and articles, the handling of images and a return to reading after an interruption. Include the devices and languages your audience actually uses. If audio or accessibility features are part of the proposed offer, ask to evaluate them with representative content. Product availability, configuration and suitability should be confirmed for your project rather than inferred from a general feature list.
Turn the demo into a shared decision record
For each scenario, record the expected result, what was demonstrated and what still needs confirmation. Distinguish a standard capability from an integration task or a future proposal. Assign owners for content delivery, subscriber access and support handovers, then include those responsibilities in the implementation discussion. Consider ongoing costs and maintenance alongside the initial setup. Compare suppliers against the same scenarios so a polished presentation does not substitute for an agreed requirement.
Use the next meeting to explore your publication’s fit
Prenly combines a publishing workspace with a reader experience across app and web. Its product pages describe integration with existing publishing environments. Use the links below to explore the relevant product areas and a real publisher migration case. They provide context; your own subscriber journeys still need to be assessed.
Bring a representative issue, a summary of your subscription rules and the unresolved questions from your checklist. A Prenly demo can then focus on your publication’s needs and the next steps to verify them.
