Three decades of digital leaps: How Helsingborgs Dagblad extends its reach with Prenly

More than thirty years have passed since Helsingborgs Dagblad became pioneers by publishing their entire newspaper online—a journey that started with Textalk’s technology.Back then, Textalk built the tools not only to convert the printed newspaper into digital articles, but also to publish these articles in HTML format. That way, the entire newspaper was truly available online.
Today, HD continues to break new ground with Prenly, making it easy to create fully digital special editions and integrate podcasts directly into the e-paper.

The Challenge

In 1995, the challenge was to get a daily newspaper online at all. Over time it became about offering readers more than just the printed edition—providing extra digital supplements and audio content in a smooth and efficient way.

The Solution

Prenly was set up so that HD could easily create digital special editions during major events, bundling them seamlessly with the e-paper without any need for print. In addition, Prenly automatically fetches HD’s podcasts from their specified podcast feeds. HD can decide whether all readers can listen to the podcast or if a specific subscription package is needed for certain channels. This also opens up new revenue opportunities for premium content.

How It Works

• HD produces their regular e-paper.
• When needed, they create a digital special edition in Prenly.
• The special edition is automatically bundled with the e-paper.
• Podcasts are automatically pulled from HD’s existing feeds and integrated into the reading experience.
• Readers can listen to the podcasts directly in the e-paper, either openly or as part of a premium subscription.

Why It Matters

For Helsingborgs Dagblad, this means they can adapt their content quickly, provide more value to their readers, and create new revenue streams through premium offerings.
